The Shining is a 1980 British-American psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick,co-written with novelist Diane Johnson, and starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers. The film is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining.
Making a film scary by relying on true tension and character/plot development is true work. But why expect any less from Kubrick. It doesn't rely on the cheap jump scares that plague so many awful horror films in this day and age. Even when it does have it's small share of them, they feel earned by all the creepy surroundings, and uneasy feelings that lead up to it. This is my favorite horror film, and I doubt it will be rivaled in the near future, if ever. This was always one of my favorite reviews by Roger. And one of my favorite films by Kubrick.
Still one of my top 3 movies. It is a masterwork of atmospherics: the framing, the moving camera, the cinematography. But I don't know what the point was except as an exercise in examining a descent into madness, which is made much less interesting because it's apparent that Jack was already crazy. T
